Arsenal Transfer News: Pepe Reina Could Move to Arsenal as Liverpool Prepare to Offload Goalkeeper

Arsenal could take advantage of the fact that Liverpool are reportedly ready to offload goalkeeper Pepe Reina in the January transfer window.

The Spanish international has not had a great time at Anfield this season, as niggling injuries coupled with the apparent reluctance of Brendan Rodgers to put his entire faith in his goalkeeper, has led to reports of Reina's possible exit.

According to the Daily Mail, Rodgers is ready to offload the 30-year-old goalkeeper, and is already targeting Jack Butland of Birmingham City or Hannover's Ron-Robert Zieler.

That means Arsenal, if interested, could go in for Reina, a goalkeeper they made a £20 million ($32 million) bid for in the summer of 2010, which was rejected, with the former Villarreal man expected to cost only half of the amount now.

Reina has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League over the past five years, and Arsenal could definitely use some of his experience as Arsene Wenger looks to salvage a season that looks like getting out of hand.

With Woeciech Szczesny still yet to prove himself on a consistent basis, Reina can be a good role model as the Pole learns his trade over the next few years.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal player Stewart Robson has called for the Gunners board members to fire Wenger from the manager's job before it is too late.

"I would have sacked him four years ago but I'm in the minority, Arsenal need a new manager and they need it soon," Robson told talkSPORT.

"He doesn't have the tactical understanding, his manner on the side of the pitch doesn't help the team, he's petulant and therefore his players become petulant. He doesn't give any information from the sidelines and his teams look under-prepared defensively.

"I wrote that article five years ago and nothing has changed my mind since. In fact, my views on Arsene Wenger are even stronger now than they were then. There's still 50 percent of the fans which will say what a good job he is doing and we must trust in Arsene Wenger but I just don't see it

"Arsenal still have good players, if somebody got hold of them and taught them how to defend, had a solid game plan and worked hard on them then I still think Arsenal can still be a very, very good side."

Robson believes giving the top job to the likes of Steve Bould or Terry Burton could revive Arsenal's fortunes. "For me, there's no reason why they can't promote from within," Robson added. "Terry Burton, who is the reserve-team boss, is an excellent coach and Steve Bould, who isn't allowed to do any work at the moment, are both candidates.

"I would like to see somebody else given a chance at Arsenal, so they can take the club forward to where it should be. I think there's some wonderful players already at the club and if some better signings come in I think Arsenal could be right back at the top again."
