Miami Dolphins Rumors: Lamar Miller, Olivier Vernon Return In Free Agency? Ndamukong Suh Contract Restructured?

The Miami Dolphins have key free agents in Lamar Miller and Olivier Vernon hitting the market and the team may have to make some salary cap cuts to keep them. Miller is expected to be the top running back target in free agency, while Vernon could command a big deal on the open market.

The Dolphins are interested in keeping Miller this offseason, but it may take a big contract offer to get a deal done. According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins "definitely" want to re-sign Miller this offseason. Miller is expected to get a number of offers on the open market and he could be a target for teams like the Cowboys, 49ers and Browns this offseason. Miller told James Walker at ESPN that "scheme and fit" would be important factors in wherever he signs for next season.

Miller was reportedly frustrated with his use by Miami last season, but with Adam Gase taking over as head coach, Miller could be more open to returning. Adam Beasley at the Herald reports that Miller should make at least $5 million per season on his new deal and that Miami will have to make some cap moves to be able to offer Miller that much. Beasley writes that Greg Jennings and Jordan Cameron could be salary cap cut options, while the team also may consider restructuring Ndamukong Suh's contract.

Miller is going to be just 25 when next season starts and he does not have too much wear and tear on his body, making him an appealing target at the running back position. Miller has only had over 200 carries once in his career and while some may see that as a knock on him, it means that he is not as banged up as some other running backs his age. Miller has not missed a game in three seasons and over the past two years he has averaged at least 4.5 yards per carry and has combined to score 16 touchdowns.

Vernon is a key player for the Dolphins as well and he could end up very expensive this offseason. Vernon has been a consistent player for the team over his career and the Herald writes that he could get a deal around $14-$15 million per season. That price tag could be too hefty for the Dolphins even if they want to keep him and the team could consider using the franchise tag if they can't agree on a new contract. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that so far there have not been any "serious contract talks" between the two sides.
