Robert Griffin III Rumors and Targets: Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, 49ers Options If Released By Redskins?

The Washington Redskins are likely releasing Robert Griffin III this offseason and once that happens, the quarterback could have suitors in the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. The Redskins are ready to commit to Kirk Cousins and that means RG3 is likely done in DC.

Griffin was benched in favor of Cousins before the season started and he was inactive for most of the year for the Redskins. Jay Gruden did what he felt was best for the team and Cousins led the Redskins to the playoffs in 2015, which is what Griffin did when he was at his best back in 2012. Griffin had a stellar rookie season, but injuries and inconsistency derailed his career in Washington and now it appears that things are ending. Griffin left a sort of goodbye note in his locker at the end of the season and reports have the team set to cut the quarterback.

According to Ian Rapoport at NFL.com, the Redskins are likely going to cut Griffin in the offseason before the new league year begins. The team could shop Griffin in trades, but the Redskins have not been shy about their plans with the QB and that has put his trade value at a low point. The team has a $16 million option for Griffin for next season and they are not going to pay that and that means Griffin is likely getting released.

Cousins is heading towards free agency and the Redskins are planning on signing him to a new contract or using the franchise tag on the QB. Once Griffin is released, he could have a number of options on the market as a backup or as a starter. Earlier in the season NFL.com reported that the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans could be options for Griffin. Chip Kelly is now in San Francisco and the team also could be a potential fit.

Griffin is unlikely going to be given a starting job, but he could get the chance to compete over the summer to start for certain teams. Yahoo Sports reports that sources said that Griffin would "love" to end up with the Cowboys and if he did, he would likely serve as the backup for Tony Romo. The Eagles could lose Sam Bradford in free agency and with Doug Pederson taking over after being in Kansas City, he could see Griffin as a solid option in the mold of Alex Smith, who also has mobility skills.

The Texans also could be a fit, as the team had to use four starters this season and they did not get great play from Brian Hoyer. The Browns are another option, but they likely will go after a QB in the draft. Griffin has the skills to be a starting quarterback, but he still needs to develop and that will not happen with the Redskins moving forward.
