NFL News and Notes: Are the Steelers Going to Cut Lawrence Timmons as Cap Casualty This Offseason?

Jan 15, 2016 01:50 PM EST

Lawrence Timmons has been a staple of the Steelers defense for a couple of years now however he is currently running into cap heavy part of his contract.

Timmons expressed earlier in the season that he would be willing to rework his contract to help save the Steelers cap space, however that might not be feasible now. If Timmons were released it would save the Steelers $8.75 million in cap space which would allow them to fill some more of their needs in free agency.

The Steelers are already one of the best teams in football as they head into their divisional playoff matchup with the Denver Broncos however every team has needs and rebuilding their secondary currently is one of them.

The Steelers gave up a ton of points through the air this offseason so they may want to attract some of the better defensive back free agents that are looking for new deals in 2016. The Steelers will also have to decide whether or not they will keep Heath Miller around as he could save the Steelers $4 million in cap space if he is released. These old vets could end up as big free agents targets come March.
