Hurricane Sandy Updates: Public Transportation, Airport, Bridges, Weather and Power Conditions in NYC

Hurricane Sandy is in full effect in blasted inter New York City shutting down public transportation and power for many in the lower part of Manhattan.

Heat, Power Outages
According to Daniel Squadron, who is serving his second term in the 25th Senatorial District, which includes areas in Manhattan and Brooklyn on both sides of the East River, was on New York 1 this afternoon. He was urging people to evacuate, especially those in Zone A.

Con Edision shutoff the heat, hot water and elevators in residences in Zone A of Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn and some areas of the Bronx, which is everybody in the lower area of the Manhattan Island. Con Ed fears that the salt water from the East River will leak into their power systems, which would cost  and take time to fix if damaged.

Bridges, Tunnels, Airport Closings
As far as bridges, at 2 p.m. bridges and tunnels will close, but the George Washington Bridge was going to remain open. The City, according to Patrick Foye, Executive Director of New York/New Jersey Port Authority. 

Foye also mentioned that 7,000 flights were cancelled. JFK is open for business, but there are no flights in operation. Small number of flights left yesterday, but the runways are only open for emergency landings. There will be no flights tomorrow as water issues will be expected.

For many of those questioning the strength and impact of this storm in comparison to Irene, the biggest difference is that flooding is expected as salt water will enter subway systems.

Rain and Wind 
The rain will continue through the night according to folks on NY1, it will be raining up until around 1 or 2 a.m. ET. As shown by the radar on Weather.com, there is a system of precipation remaining above the city.

The gusts of wind will remain throughout the day along with the rain. When the rain concludes, the wing gusts will stay and are expected to return to norm at around sunset tomorrow.
