The Green Bay Packers came very close to their 2015 season being tossed away. The team is already dealing with the loss of Jordy Nelson for the season following an ACL tear. Saturday's preseason game brought yet another scare when Randall Cobb went down with what was originally thought as a severe shoulder injury, but now might not be as bad. Will the injury scare for the Packers to make a move for some wide receiver help before the upcoming season?
According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, the Packers are hopeful that Cobb is healthy by Week 1 of the regular season after the wide receiver was diagnosed with a should sprain following tests from the team doctor. Cobb went down after trying to make a catch on the third play from scrimmage. The receiver told the media he thought he broke his collar bone, but now is simply being ruled day-to-day and could be back sooner rather than later.
"I just caught the ball and was going down to the ground, and I had a guy land on top of me," Cobb said, via ESPN.com. "I was just jogging off the field at the end of the series, and I could feel the pain. I didn't know exactly what it was. It was discomfort, and I let Doc check it out and we went back and got X-rays. It's not what we think it could've been."
The question is whether or not the Packers need another receiver. Right now the team is relying on Davante Adams and Ty Montgomery to fill the void of losing Nelson while Cobb steps up as the top receiver for the team. It is unclear whether or not that till be enough. Yes, the Packers do have Aaron Rodgers and dominant run game with Eddie Lacy and James Starks, but getting depth would be critical.
According to NJ.com, despite reports, Riley Cooper will not be a trade target as the Eagles are unlikely to get rid of someone with a good amount of game time. Justin Hunter or Hakeem Nicks could be options with the Tennessee Titans. According to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, either wide receiver could be an option either by trade or free agency if one is released prior to the year starting.
For now, Wes Welker, Denarius Moore and DeVier Posey remain the best options in free agency. The Packers have yet to take the chance at working out Welker while Moore and Posey were just released in the first round of roster cuts. Any of those options could be good additions for Green Bay should another injury scare pop up.
