NY Jets Rumors: Geno Smith Return Ends Ryan Fitzpatrick Trade for Zach Mettenberger, Kirk Cousins as Brandon Marshall Pushes Jeremy Kerley, Devin Smith Battle

While Geno Smith is not on pace to play in a football game any time soon, his return to the football field is offering up some optimism if there is any for the New York Jets. The quarterback underwent successful surgery to repair a broken jaw and is not expected to be back until at least the fifth game of the regular season. However, the Jets got a welcomed sight as Smith returned to practice and began throwing the ball around.

According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Smith came back to practice in a non-contract jersey and was seen throwing passes with receivers. It was his first appearance since suffering the jaw injury in the now infamous locker room fight. Head coach Todd Bowles told the media that Smith could begin light physical activity next week which could put him ahead of schedule and closer to returning to the quarterback position.

Depending on who is asked, that may or may not be a sign of optimism for Jets fans. Ryan Fitzpatrick's real debut with the team was lack luster to say the least. The veteran quarterback struggled with the pass rush of the Atlanta Falcons and failed to really impress despite the talent on the offensive side of the ball. As a result, Bryce Petty stepped in to win the preseason game and rumors began to fly that a trade could end up being the best option for the Jets.

ESPN began to make the case that the Jets consider a quarterback trade for the upcoming season. Zach Mettenberger, Kirk Cousins or Mike Glennon are all starting quarterback options and would likely come for cheap as teams aim to capitalize off their high value. However, if Smith is set to return by Week 4 or earlier, a trade is simply unnecessary and the Jets will just hold tight with Fitzpatrick under center.

Injuries will make or break the success of the quarterback. Devin Smith and Jeremy Kerley remain out with problems while Jace Amaro is now out with an issue. What was deemed a minor shoulder injury is now something serious and Amaro is now doubtful to start the regular season. That is not good news for New York. Kerley and Smith are expected to battle for the third recevier spot in the rotation. As a result, players like DeVier Posey and Chris Owusu are getting plenty of first-team work and could be starters come the first game of the season depending on who is healthy.
