The Carolina Panthers quest to repeat as NFC South champions just got a little harder. While the team already had questionable depth at the wide receiver position, it just got worse with Kelvin Benjamin out for the season. Benjamin went down in a non-contract drill during a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins. Originally the injury was ruled a knee sprain, but has now been confirmed as an ACL tear which leaves the Panthers searching for options.

ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reported that following the results of an MRI, Benjamin was confirmed to have an ACL tear and will miss the entire season. The loss of Benjamin means the Panthers are now without their No.1 wide receiver who posted 1,008 yards last year with nine touchdowns after being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.

"Obviously, we feel awful for Kelvin," general manager Dave Gettleman said in a statement via ESPN.com. "He's worked tremendously hard to put himself in a position to have a strong year. We're confident he will attack his surgery and rehab with the same determination he has met all challenges before."

The Panthers will first look at internal options to replace Benjamin. Rookie Devin Funchess who was drafted in the second round this year is the best candidate, but the Charlotte Observer is reporting he is out for a few days with a hamstring strain. Outside of the rookie, the Panthers have Ted Ginn Jr, Jarrett Boykin and Jerricho Cotchery. While they are quality options, the Panthers will likely be forced to sign someone off the free agent market which has a few marquee names sitting around.

According to Dan Hanzus of NFL.com, the best option for Carolina could be Wes Welker who is healthy and waiting on a deal. He put up a career-low 9.5 yards per catch last season with the Denver Broncos, but is one of the most productive slot receivers in the league. If the Panthers need someone he is the best option and would sign a cheap contract. Reggie Wayne would do the same as he sits available. Wayne told ESPN that he wants to play one more season and preferably sign with a contending team. The Panthers fit that bill.

Outside of Welker and Wayne, the options dwindle big time. Santonio Holmes is available after a quiet stint with the Chicago Bears last season. Brandon Lloyd is an option after starting three games last year for the 49ers. Robert Meachem is a strong vertical threat who spent last year with the Saints. He is 31 and the youngest of the free agent group. The Panthers will be forced to take a look.
