San Diego Chargers News and Rumors: Phillip Rivers Gets Contract Extension, Stays With Team If LA Move Happens?

Phillip Rivers
Rivers had a down year in 2011, and still made that Pro Bowl. While the Chargers have certainly underachieved at points with him at quarterback, there’s no denying he’s one of the best in the league. He’s thrown for at least 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns in each of the past four seasons."

Veteran quarterback Phillip Rivers has signed a contract extension that is worth $84 million with $65 million guaranteed. Rivers was due for an extension for some time now however the Chargers finally pulled the trigger and locked up their prized quarterback.

Rivers will be with the Chargers until 2019 and the deal includes a no trade clause which may be indicative to the Chargers staying put in San Diego. Rivers does not want to play in Los Angeles and wants to retire in Alabama so any sudden organizational moves would make for some poor timing.

Rivers is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL however the organizations lack of success in recent years stems from the lack of talent available on the roster. The defense is still a question mark even though it was nice to see Melvin Ingram get some pressure.

They Chargers drafted the drafts most sought after running back, Melvin Gordon but after a lukewarm start can the Chargers line get used to the rookie running back? There was also the question of weapons and what Phillip Rivers needs to be successful, the Chargers now have Stevie Johnson a deep threat whom is currently working with the best quarterback of his career. Things are looking bright for San Diego and their Chargers.
