The Washington Wizards were conservative in their offseason approach as the team has big expectations for next free agent run with Kevin Durant hitting the market. However, they are still eyeing a few moves before putting a bow on this offseason and getting ready for the year ahead. Part of that is negotiating a new contract for backcourt star Bradley Beal, something easier said than done.
According to J. Michael of CSNWashington.com, negotiations between the Wizards and Beal are not progressing as much as the team had hoped they would. The Wizards have been in talks with Beal to get him a contract now, but they have incentive to wait on a deal. Beal wants a max contract as he is set to earn just over $5 million this season. If he were to sign now, Michael reports his salary cap number would be over $20 million. If he were to wait until next year, his cap hold would be $14 million. That extra room gives Washington the chance to sign both Beal and Durant next year.
There is no risk that Beal leaves Washington any time soon, but he is going to make sure he gets the absolute most money he can earn. The Wizards will want to wait on making a signing. Beal might be a sharp shooter that pairs well with John Wall, but he has missed 54 games over the past three seasons. That injury history is a red flag for Washington. A repeat season like that means Beal will earn less than expected.
The Wizards will have some decisions to make in the coming offseason. Otto Porter's contract is covered in team options after this season. If the newly drafted Kelly Oubre begins to excel at the position, retaining Porter might not be a total priority especially if Durant is coming on board. Wall has been very complimentary of the new rookie who ended summer league play on a high note as the Wizards could favor the smaller salary hit if the rookie plays well.
Meanwhile, interest is growing in guard Garrett Temple. According to ESPN.com, the Utah Jazz have contacted Washington about a potential deal. The New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers could also show interest in Temple as they have doubts with their current slew of point guards and backcourt help.
