Miami Dolphins Rumors: Evan Mathis Free Agent Target, Josh Freeman, Rishard Matthews Make Roster After Training Camp? DeVante Parker Rehab Continues

Jul 18, 2015 02:51 PM EDT

The Miami Dolphins could be in the mix for Evan Mathis as a free agent ahead of training camp and this comes as the team has DeVante Parker on track in rehab as he tries to get healthy for Week 1 after having foot surgery, while Richard Matthews and Josh Freeman are looking to take advantage of their opportunities to make the roster out of camp.

The Dolphins had early interest in Mathis and as training camp gets closer it's likely the guard will pick a team soon. According to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have "some degree" of interest in Mathis and there is a chance they will try and sign him. Mathis said to the paper his choices will be "more clear" as training camp gets closer and Miami is expected to be in the mix. The Herald reported that the team did not want to get into a "bidding war" for Mathis, but the team has a need on the offensive line.

Parker had foot surgery earlier in the offseason and while he will miss camp, he is slated to be back for Week 1 of the season the Miami Herald reports that Parker's agent said that the rehab has gone "perfect" and that he is on track for his recovery. Parker was a first round pick and he is expected to be an impact player right away for the Dolphins. Rishard Matthews may be able to take advantage of Parker's absence, as he could get more reps in training camp.

Matthews was reportedly at risk of getting released and nervously asked for a trade this offseason, but that now appears off the table. The Herald reports that "some players" on the Dolphins see Matthews as a contributor and that he would "thrive if he had a larger role." Depending on how things go with Parker, Matthews could make the roster along with Jarvis Landry and Greg Jennings.

The team also brought in Josh Freeman and he is set to battle with McLeod Bethel-Thompson for the third string QB job behind Matt Moore for Ryan Tannehill. Freeman signed a one year deal with the Dolphins and he is looking to make a strong impression in camp to try and catch on with the Dolphins after a few tough years since playing in Tampa Bay. The team is set with Ryan Tannehill but injuries happen all the time and that could be a factor in who makes the roster for the team.

Tannehill signed a long extension this offseason and the Dolphins expect the offense to be much better. Parker is coming back and the team also brought in Jay Ajayi in the draft and signed Jordan Cameron to join Landry and Lamar Miller on offense for Tannehill.
