With NFL training camp getting ready to kick off, teams have been getting a look at lingering needs on the roster. Injuries and other issues could force last minute additions before reporting for practice and several wide receivers are sitting on the market waiting for a call. With marquee veterans hoping a team calls their number in the coming weeks, Reggie Wayne has told the media that he is in talks with several teams about a potential contract.
Wayne is a free agent after a long-time stint with the Indianapolis Colts. According to Mike Wells of ESPN.com, Wayne is hoping to play one more year in the league before retirement and several teams have expressed interest in bringing him on. Last season Wayne caught 64 passes for 779 yards and two touchdowns after recovering from a torn ACL suffered in 2013. Wayne failed to look like the same dominating threat on the field that he was in years prior, but according to the veteran he can still play and teams want him.
Any team looking for some depth help could aim to bring on Wayne. There are other players available like Wes Welker and James Jones that want contracts, but if Wayne only intends to play one more season then he will likely be the cheapest to acquire. So is there a landing spot for him in the coming weeks?
The New England Patriots could be considered an option. The team was linked to several wide receiver deals in the offseason in order to help the rotation that consists of Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell and an inconsistent Danny Amendola. The Miami Dolphins have been keeping an eye on the market as they are currently dealing with an injury to DeVante Parker who may or may not be healthy come the start of the season. According to the Miami Herald, Parker is progressing nicely after getting a screw replaced in his foot, but he might not be healthy come the start of the year.
The Philadelphia Eagles could eye a veteran to help on the roster. The team is depending on youth more this season as Jordan Matthews takes over as the No.1 threat in his second season while Nelson Agholor is expected to fight for a starting spot. Riley Cooper struggled in camp which could mean the Eagles aim for help with depth. The Cleveland Browns could be thinking the same thing. The team opted not to acquire an elite No.1 player and signed Dwayne Bowe and Brian Hartline instead. Adding Wayne would certainly not be a bad idea since it gives the team another weapon to work with.
