The St. Louis Rams probably set the precedent for this week's results as there were a couple of surprises in Sunday's results. The Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints all defeated teams that were tougher than them on paper.
The Saints had Sean Payton in the building as Drew Brees prepared for a special night. The key to this victory was that they were playing for more than just a football game, but Brees and the Saints were chasing history and Brees did not waste anytime accomlishing the feat.
For the 48th consecutive game, Drew Brees threw a touchdown completion passing the great Johnny Unitas. Brees hit Devery Henderson for the 40-yard touchdown. It was his first of four TDs thrown in the game as the Saints recorded their first win of the season and defeated the formerly 3-1 San Diego Chargers.
The Colts were also playing for more than just a ball game as their head coach Chuck Pagano continues hospitalized as he is fighting leukimia.
Andrew Luck and the Colts found themselves down 21-3 at the half. The roared back in the second half to defeat the Green Bay Packers. They outscored the Pack 27-6 in the second half and won after putting together an 80-yard scoring drive that finished in a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
Mason Crosby missed a 51-yard field goal and the Colts won the game.
Finally, not playing for anything more than respect in the AFC East, the Dolphins quieted the Bengals' offensive arsenal and defeated them 17-13, wrapping up the game by intercepting Andy Dalton as he tried to string together a drive for his team.
Ryan Tannehill finished with 223 yards passing and no touchdowns as both scores came on the ground courtesy of Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas. This matchup came down to offensive struggles as there were a total of five turnovers in the game.
Nonetheless, the Dolphins are 2-3 and within striking distance of second place as the New York Jets will more than likely lose their game against the Houston Texans on Monday.
The Colts are 2-2 after their win and are in second place in the AFC South. The Saints are 1-4, tied with the Carolina Panthers for last place in the NFC South.
Still a lot of football left to be played. Let's see if these teams can surprise.
