The NY Giants and Jason Pierre-Paul have been working on a new contract this summer and after JPP suffered a "severe" hand injury following a fireworks accident over July 4, New York may think twice about giving the defensive end a long term deal ahead of training camp and now he is more likely to sign the franchise tag tender deal.

The Giants used the franchise tag on Pierre-Paul earlier in the offseason and the two sides have until July 15 to complete a long term deal. Recent reports had the two sides talking, but not close on a deal and this latest development could be the end of any chance of JPP getting a long term deal. According to Pro Football Talk, Pierre-Paul was "severely injured" in the accident, but the injury is not "career threatening" for the defensive end.

The careless thinking by JPP may cost him major money, as the team was already unsure about giving the defensive end a long term deal. The Giants reportedly were fine with Pierre-Paul on a one year deal, as the tender is about as much money as JPP is expecting to get on a yearly contract. Pierre-Paul had a bounce back year after two disappointing seasons and the team now may let things play out before signing JPP long term after this accident.

According to the New York Post,  Paul Schwartz reports that Pierre-Paul burnt some of the "flesh on his hand" and some was "burned off his palm and fingers, but his fingers are intact," so that's a good development. Chris Mortensen at ESPN reports that the injury "may not be game or season threatening either", but that doesn't mean the Giants will just go along like everything is fine. The tender for the one year deal is $14.8 million and the Giants technically could rescind the offer if they want, according to Pro Football Talk. PFT reports that is unlikely, as that would make him an unrestricted free agent.

The NY Giants came into the offseason with Jason Pierre-Paul as their main target and he was hit with the franchise tag and this comes as Antrel Rolle and Walter Thurmond are gone from the defense. The team likely will not sign JPP to a major deal and the team also has Eli Manning and his situation and he could be in line for a contract extension eventually. JPP's situation likely will be updated as training camp gets closer and this hand issue surely will play into what happens with negotiations moving forward. The Giants need JPP on the line, but a long term deal may not be in the cards now.

Keeping Pierre-Paul will be hard enough, as he is just 26 and has plenty of potential. JPP had a rebound season, putting up 12.5 sacks after getting only 8.5 combined the previous two seasons. The Giants pass rush is not what it once was and losing someone like JPP will be tough to deal with. The team signed Rashad Jennings last season to help with the rushing attack, but he dealt with injuries and the Giants added Shane Vereen to help Andre Williams in the backfield.
