Wayne Rooney returned for Manchester United as the Red Devils edged out Newcastle United 2-1, while Arsenal scored six past Coventry City, with new boy Olivier Giroud finally opening his account.
Liverpool scored a 2-1 victory over West Brom, with Jerome Sinclair becoming the youngest player in the club's history after coming on as a second half substitute, as Tottenham, Reading and Norwich also picked up wins.
Rooney was named in the United starting line-up after his return from injury, with the home side taking a 2-0 lead, with a little over half an hour to go. Anderson opened the scoring just before halftime with a brilliantly taken goal, with Tom Cleverley doubling the lead in the 58th minute.
Newcastle, however, fought back when Papiss Cisse, who came on from the bench, halved the deficit four minutes later. And the Senegalese could have equalized late on, but saw his bicycle kick crash off the crossbar.
At the Emirates, it was all Arsenal. League One side Coventry kept the game at 0-0 until the 39th minute, before the goal everybody had been waiting for was scored by the person everyone had been hoping would. Giroud got on the end of a pass from Andrey Arshavin, which was guided onto the path of the French international by Francis Coquelin, for the striker to chip it over the goalkeeper.
Giroud missed a penalty, but set up Arshavin for the Gunners' third goal after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had made it 2-0 with a screamer. Ignasi Miquel made it 4-0, with Theo Walcott adding the icing to the cake courtesy two goals. Callum Ball got Coventry's consolation strike.
At the Hawthorns, Nuri Sahin scored a double to spur Liverpool to a much-needed victory over West Brom. Gabriel Tamas had opened the scoring for Albion in the 3rd minute, but Sahin struck both the equalizer and the winner late on in the 82nd minute, to hand Brendan Rodgers' side victory. Sinclair was the talk of the town, however, after the teenager - aged 16 years and six days - was brought on for Samed Yesil a little before Sahin's winner.
Goals from Jan Vertonghen, Andros Townsend and Gylfi Sigurdsson helped Spurs to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Carlisle, while a youthful Norwich City side scored a narrow 1-0 win over Doncaster.
Reading came from behind twice to down Queens Park Rangers 3-2 in an entertaining game, with Pavel Pogrebnyak scoring the winning goal.
United will head to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the next round, while Arsenal take on Reading away. Rodgers welcomes his old club Swansea to Anfield.
