The Seattle Seahawks have some contract issues on their hands. The team successful re-signed everyone they needed to last year, but are having a hard time getting deals done in 2015. Once again, several of their key stars are looking for new contracts, but big deals assigned to players like Jimmy Graham and Marshawn Lynch are hurting the efforts.
One player not happy with the Seahawks front office at the moment is Bruce Irvin. According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks did not pick up Irvin's fifth-year option worth $7.8 million which means the pass rusher could be a free agent next summer. Irvin is not thrilled about this result and is taking to social media to voice his concerns.
In a series of Tweets, Irvin wrote, "Worked for everything I got in my life this (expletive) will b no different! I earn my keeps. Faced way tougher adversity getting outta them streets coming up! That's (expletive) is nothing! (Expletive) THAT OPTION!"
It is clear Irvin is not thrilled which might push trade rumors onto the pass rusher again. Prior to the NFL Draft, it was reported by the Seattle Times that Irvin could be traded as the Atlanta Falcons were showing interest in a deal. Everyone denied the report as head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider insisted that they intended to keep Irvin around for a long time. Salary cap restraints were the reason the option was not picked up.
The other issue is a contract for Russell Wilson which is expected to be a big weight on the cap space. Wilson and the Seahawks are currently working towards getting a contract extension done that would likely make the quarterback the highest paid player in the league. According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the negotiations are not going as quickly as the team would like.
"It's ongoing, but going a little slow," Carroll said, via ESPN.com. "We're waiting to hear from their side. Every guy's individual case [on contract negotiations] is different. Russell has been an extraordinary player for us and for our community. We hope to get something done as soon as we can and we're working at it. But there are parts that are moving here. We've worked very hard to keep this team together and Russell is a huge part of that. He's going to be with us and we're excited about moving forward with him."
According to ESPN, Wilson is eyeing a deal worth at least $20 million a season with $60 million in guaranteed money. The Seahawks are suddenly dealing with some salary cap issues that could hurt the effort. Time will tell if a deal actually gets done in time for the season to start.
