The Milwaukee Brewers have gotten off to a bad start this season and things could easily get worse before they get better. Already sitting at just 2-6 on the season, the Brewers are at risk of being without one of their top hitters, Carlos Gomez after he exited Wednesday's game with a hamstring injury. Looking to end their series with the St. Louis Cardinals on a high note, they will have to do so without their center fielder.
Gomez could miss a significant amount of time if his hamstring injury is worse than predicted. The center fielder limped off the field during Wednesday's loss and the Brewers are uncertain exactly how much time the All-Star will miss as he heads to get further tests on the issue. Gomez downplayed the injury as just some soreness, but Milwaukee is being cautious knowing just how important Gomez is. In his previous six games, Gomez was hitting .320 with six RBIs. He then went 0 for 5 on Wednesday while the Brewers are currently hitting just .229 with the fewest wins in the National League.
Milwaukee had the right moves to get guys on base on Wednesday, but failed to actually bring any of them home. The team exploded with 10 hits, but left 11 on base while going 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position. The team will put Mike Fiers on the mound in hopes that his success against the Cardinals can generate a win. The starter has a 1.40 ERA in four starts against St. Louis. He was roughed up by the Pittsburgh Pirates in his last start, giving up five runs in five innings. Cardinals' top hitters Yadier Molina, Matt Carpenter and Matt Holiday are a combined 3 for 34 against the pitcher.
That trio of hitters is thriving at the moment. They had six of St. Louis' 10 hits on Wednesday while being responsible for all of their runs as well. Holliday is hitting .333 at the moment while Carpenter is 6 for 14 with five RBIs in his last three games.
John Lackey will start for St. Louis. He went 1-1 with a 5.54 ERA against the Brewers last season. In his last start he gave up two two-run home runs to Joey Votto while the Cardinals fell to the Cincinnati Reds.
