The San Francisco 49ers continue to eye wide receivers on the free agent market, but have yet to make an official signing. The team has Anquan Boldin and the newly signed Torrey Smith. The 49ers have options on the roster, but they appear to be favoring adding one more player for cheap. According to Hakeem Nicks, he is on the short list to be one of the franchise's options.
Nicks told Josina Anderson of ESPN that he was being courted by the 49ers and was on his way to San Francisco to work out for the team. Nicks has garnered little interest on the free agent market after no getting re-sign by the Indianapolis Colts after another dismal season. Nicks has struggled over the past three season which has really diminished his value towards other teams, making it hard to find a job for the 2015 season. The 49ers need receivers after the departures of Stevie Johnson and Crabtree while they will be hoping Jerome Simpson can step up to help Colin Kaepernick.
According to 49ers general manager Trent Baalke, Crabtree has not been ruled out as a potential option. Baalke made it clear to never say never on Crabtree, but so far they have made no efforts to show commitment to the idea. Crabtree's market is also incredibly weak. The Miami Dolphins have taken a look at the receiver along with the Seattle Seahawks, but no one has signed him yet. Crabtree has said he is content with taking his time in free agency, but the long he sits on the market, the more likely it is he will be left out in 2015.
While the 49ers continue looking for a wide receiver to add to the competition, they have an exciting matchup in the works at the running back spot. Head coach Jim Tomsula told the media via ProFootballTalk.com that he views the newly signed Reggie Bush as an every-down running back, but Carlos Hyde is expecting to be that player for San Francisco. Kendall Hunter would also like to be in the mix after signing a contract extension following his season-ending injury. There is expected to be a slight battle for the starting spot in the backfield behind Kaepernick.
