Seattle Seahawks Rumors: Greg Jennings, Michael Crabtree, Brandon Spikes Free Agent Targets With Russell Wilson Contract Extension?

Mar 16, 2015 11:46 AM EDT

The Seattle Seahawks pulled off arguably the biggest move of the offseason by acquiring Jimmy Graham and now the team could look at free agents on the market, as names like Greg Jennings, Michael Crabtree, Brandon Spikes, Dwight Freeney and Ben Tate are available and this comes as the team may be working on a lucrative contract extension for Russell Wilson.

The Seahawks signed Marshawn Lynch to a new deal this offseason and that was the main priority for GM John Schneider before he turned his attention to Wilson. According to ESPN.com, Wilson and the Seahawks may come to an agreement on a contract extension this offseason, as both sides likely want to get a deal done before next year. Wilson is coming into the final year of his contract and the Seahawks want to ensure that they secure him before he hits the market.

--UPDATE: Cecil Shorts has signed a two year deal with the Houston Texans, according to Adam Schefter.

The team is also looking for more upgrades on offense past Jimmy Graham and Terry Blount at ESPN.com identifies WR as the main need for the Seahawks. Blount writes that the trade of Percy Harvin opens things up for the Seahawks and the available players the team could look at include Greg Jennings, Michael Crabtree, Cecil Shorts and Hakeem Nicks.

Jennings was released by the Vikings after Mike Wallace was traded, while Crabtree, Short and Nicks all hit free agency when the league year opened. Crabtree has had his issues with the Seahawks, but if the team sees him as a player that can help, they will put that aside if they bring him in for Wilson.

Wilson and his deal are the next things for the Seahawks to worry about, as he is in line to get a massive extension. ESPN reports that the team could get "creative" about making Wilson one of the highest paid players in football, including by making his entire contract guaranteed. The team also could chase some linebackers on the market, as Mason Foster and Brandon Spikes are both available. The team lost Malcolm Smith to a free agent deal to the Raiders and the team could look at one of those players to help replace him.

The Seahawks also could be one of the teams in the mix for a running back later on in the draft, as this year has a very deep class. The team re-signed Marshawn Lynch and while they have Robert Turbin and Christine Michael on the roster, they could use some more depth for the future and that could lead to the team taking someone like Todd Gurley or Melvin Gordon.

Running backs have slipped out of the first round over the past few years and with a class this deep, there could be some strong players left in the middle rounds. The Seahawks traded their first round pick to the Saints in the draft and with one of their late selections they could look at someone to come up behind Lynch.

The Seahawks have Lynch back after he contemplated retirement this offseason and after all that happened this year with Lynch, the team likely will want some insurance moving forward. Turbin and Michael are solid, but they may not be future number one backs and that could lead to the team drafting a running back.
