The clock is ticking for the Miami Dolphins and Mike Wallace. The team continues to sort through the options of what to do with the high-priced wide receiver as the team could certainly use the salary cap space that would come with letting him go. However, the absence of Wallace means the team needs another receiving threat, making the decision difficult. As team officials try and convince Wallace to take a pay cut, a trade might be the only option at this point.
According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Miami Dolphins are seeking trade interest on Wallace not just because of his contract and low stats, but also his attitude in the locker room. Wallace has been outspoken in his displeasure with Miami over the past two seasons. He has complained about everything from the lack of deep balls to his chemistry with quarterback Ryan Tannehill. During the final game of the season, Wallace actually benched himself, something that reportedly did not sit well with teammates in the locker room.
The Dolphins are not ready to out-right release Wallace just yet. The Miami Herald reported that the two sides first met to discuss restructuring Wallace's contract which is a heavy cap hit. The team is looking to lock Tannehill in to an extension this season and need the space to do so. They also have to meet needs at the offensive line, running back and defensive end positions. Wallace's deal is simply not ideal for the salary cap.
There will be very little trade interest in Wallace simply because his contract does not meet the production. It is clear that Wallace can be a real threat to any offense, but teams must be willing to overlook some of the off-the-field drama issues. The Oakland Raiders are really the only team with the salary cap space to handle Wallace's contract and they certainly need a top wide receiver, but NFL sources report Oakland is looking to Randall Cobb or the draft to meet that need.
The Dolphins do not necessarily need Wallace. Jarvis Landry proved he is a top receiver after a successful rookie season. The team is looking to re-sign tight end Charles Clay. They also have the ever-reliable Brian Hartline to work with. The Dolphins could release Wallace and sign someone for a much cheaper and team-friendly deal instead.
