49ers Rumors: Colin Kaepernick Struggles Force Josh McCown, Brian Hoyer Free Agency Contract? Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley Draft Options Over San Francisco Trade

The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of decisions to make this offseason regarding player personnel. 2014 did not go at all the way the franchise was hoping and now they are left to do more rebuilding than they originally intended on. With Jim Tomsula taking over as head coach, the team could end up going in a number of directions as several of their star players approach free agency. However, despite the expiring contracts of Michael Crabtree and Frank Gore, is the quarterback position taking priority?

The 49ers just made a long-term commitment to Colin Kaepernick to the tune of seven years and $126 million. That idea that they are ready to move on from the star is simply unfathomable. However, Kaepernick had his moments of struggle in 2014 which could lead the 49ers to load up on depth this season as insurance for the future.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the 49ers could be eyeing free agency quarterbacks to place behind Kaepernick for 2015. The top player suggested is Josh McCown who just released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and already acquiring looks on the free agent market. Surrounded by talent, McCown is a solid starting option. The Buccaneers had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL last year, making his job very hard. However, that would not be the case with San Francisco as the team has the playmakers to help McCown out if signed.

There is no denying that Kaepernick has talent and can be successful. He put up a solid campaign in 2014, but he is at a crossroads in his career. The quarterback took a step back mechanically last season while never appearing truly comfortable in the pocket and making moves with his legs out of panic. The issues are certainly fixable, but the 49ers might not hesitate to add depth just in case. Players like Brian Hoyer and Mark Sanchez could be options while the team may aim to draft a rookie like Brett Hundley who players with a similar skill set.

The 49ers have to focus on offense as Gore and Crabtree could be preparing to exit. Gore made it clear that while he loves the 49ers, he is not sure the feeling is mutual as he prepares to test the market as an aging running back. "I know the fans love me but I need to know if the management does," Gore said via Instagram. Crabtree is in the same boat. The wide receiver removed all things 49ers from his social media accounts which have the 49ers eyeing wide receivers in the draft. The team is doing more rebuilding than planned, but they have the chance to bring in some players for a successful future.
