It is no secret the Atlanta Falcons need major roster upgrades in the offseason. If this team is going to dig itself out of the hole created over the past two offseasons, they must start to target some bigger names in free agency. With Dan Quinn likely (avoiding tampering rules) coming in to be the next head coach, his system will require changes on both sides of the ball. The Falcons need running backs, tight ends and pass rushers and Quinn along with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan can use their connections to bring certain players in for 2015.

The running back position is an area of focus for the Falcons. The team did not get the rushing attack they were hoping for in 2014. Veteran Steven Jackson struggled once again to be dominant and his expiring contract means the Falcons will move on from him. The same can likely be said for Jacquizz Rodgers who got lost in the shuffle in the four-man rotation. Devonta Freeman will be back and will get more responsibility, but the Falcons need another body for help.

According to CBSSports.com, Quinn could use his connections to possibly bring in big running back help in the name of Marshawn Lynch. Now, this is pure speculation right now. Lynch would either need to be released or traded to make the move happen. The Falcons are unlikely to make a trade for the running back, but could target him in free agent pending contract demands. Quinn also has connections with Justin Forsett who had a breakout year with the Baltimore Ravens.

The Falcons must add a running back regardless. They had one of the worst run games in the league last year. Players like CJ Spiller, Mark Ingram and Knowshon Moreno will be cheaper pickups and allow the Falcons to make other moves as well. The team needs another tight end and younger wide receiver so overpaying on a running back is out of the question.

The team will also aim to get a pass rusher on the defense and hope Quinn's connections work there as well. SBNation outlines the potential of several defensive players from Seattle coming to Atlanta. Players like Malcolm Smith could help the terrible linebackers group for the Falcons, especially if Sean Weatherspoon or Kroy Biermann leave. Cornerback Byron Maxwell could also be a big signing as well with the departure of Robert McClain. The Falcons will be wise with how they spend their money, but at the same time, showing patience is how the team ended up with players like Tyson Jackson and Paul Soliai. The franchise must be aggressive this summer.
