Olympics 2012 Men's Boxing Results: Light Welter (64kg) Cuba's Iglesias Will Face Ukraine's Berinchyk

Aug 10, 2012 10:15 AM EDT

Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo of Cuba will advance to the Men's Batam Weight Finals as he defeated Italian Vincenzo Mangiacapre in the first bout of the semifinals of the Light Welter weight class 15-8.

The first round started out slow as Iglesias took the first round 3-2. Both boxers exchanged numerous punches in the second round.

Italy's boxer seemed the superior defender as his head never stayed still, making Iglesias miss punches that would have devastated the Italian. He had a little Robert de Niro's "Raging Bull" in his style. In the second round, however, he could not manuver his way out of Iglesias uppercut that made Vicenzo's head cock back after the blow as Iglesias won the second round 7-4.

Iglesias waited for Vicenzo to get close in the third round as he would punish him with straight jabs and hooks.

Iglesias gets prepared to face Ukraine's Denys Berinchyk, who is ranked second in the weight class and he showed why in his performance

Berinchyk defeated Mongolia's Munkh-Erdene Uranchimeg in the second fight of the Men's Welter Weight semifinals 29-21.

This bout looked more like a wrestling match as both players were very physical. Tying each other up and knocking each other down, but not with punches. Then it turned brutal as Uranchimeg cut open Uranchimeg's nose.

Uranchimeg tried using his length to keep Berinchyk off, but the Ukrainian chased him where ever he went in the ring and landed a big left hook on Uranchimeg's chin.

The Mongolian battled back in the second round with a flurry of body punches and head shots that were impossible to counter.

In the third round Ukraine's boxer dazed the Mongolian, having the referee count up to seven to give Uranchimeg some time to recuperate. Uranchimeg had a bloody nose forcing the referee top stop the bout again.
