The United States gymnastics team can finally celebrate at the Olympics after winning gold in the women's team event Tuesday afternoon.

For the first time since the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, the Americans earned gold at the medal stand.

The floor work of both Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber cemented Team USA victory over silver medalists from Russia and bronze medalists from Romania.

Gabby Douglas and Raisman had performed in the qualification round, the story of Sunday night was that Wieber, the defending world champion, had not advanced to the individual all-around competition.

Jordyn Wieber rebound nicely from Sunday's showing with 14.666 and no major mistakes.

The U.S. maintained its slim advantage -- leading Russia just 92.931 to 92.532 -- heading into the third rotation, balance beam. The three Americans all posted solid scores, led by Gabby Douglas' 15.233 (Kyla Ross turned in a 15.133 and Raisman scored a 14.933)

Russia held a lead early, but any chance Russia had of challenging the United States were ended with two errors during their final floor routine.

The low tallies meant the United States just needed to avoid collapse of epic proportions on the floor routine to win.

As a result, they had to settle for silver, having amassed 178.530 points.

The Romanian team had a score of 176.414. This will be Romania's 10 consecutive medals placing in women's team gymnastics.
