MLB Trade Rumors 2012: Arizona Diamondbacks Trying to Get Phillies' Cliff Lee or Seattle Mariners' Felix Hernandez

Jul 31, 2012 09:05 AM EDT

The Arizona Diamonbacks are looking to make a blockbuster deal. The splash they are trying to make is monumental. Rumor has it, according to Ken Rosenthal, that they are possibly trying to land either Cliff Lee or Felix Hernandez.

What is amazing about this rumor is that King Felix has been the player the Seattle Mariners have said they would never trade. The New York Yankees have made attempts in the past and were asked for too much in their young right handed prospects in the minors.

However, the Mariners did ask about Diamondback's outfielder Justin Upton earlier this month. Upton has been a chip the D'Backs have had on the market for the last couple of months during the season.

The Philadelphia Phillies on the other hand, have been rumored to being open to trading Cliff Lee. Their general manager, Ruben Amaro Jr. said that they would base their trade deadline movement would be based on their performance over the weekend against the Atlanta Braves.

Yeah, well they got swept. So it might be time to shake things up a little bit.

The issue with the Lee deal is the money. Lee is owed $87.5 million in three years, meanwhile Upton is just worth $38.5 in the same time period.

That is a difference of almost $50 million the Phillies will have to find a way to balance out.

Diamondbacks' GM Kevin Towers said he would be willing to trade Upton for the right price, but now that Arizona finds itself in the heat of the National League West, chances are they would want a lot for the young outfielder.

The Arizana Diamondbacks are currently in third place in the NL West, three games behind the first place Los Angeles Dodgers (who have been pretty busy before the deadline) and the San Francisco Giants.
