Penn State Sanctions: Silas Redd Meeting With USC Head Coach Lane Kiffin As Transfer Rumors Swirl

The transfer rumors surrounding Penn State running back Silas Redd just got a whole lot more concrete.

Multiple sources reported Thursday morning that Redd is meeting with USC head coach Lane Kiffin regarding the possibility of a transfer. Transfer rumors have surrounded Penn State ever since the NCAA handed down its sanctions against the program on Monday. As the Nittany Lions face a four-year bowl ban and a loss of scholarships, the NCAA announced that Penn State players can transfer to other schools with immediate eligibility.

ESPN radio host Colin Cowherd posted to his Twitter account (@ESPN_Colin) at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday, "Silas Redd, sitting down w USC coach NOW. That sort of explains why he isn't at Big 10 Media Day."

ESPN college football analyst Joe Schad later confirmed that Redd is meeting with Kiffin.

Redd was originally scheduled to be one of three PSU players attending Big Ten Media Days in Chicago this week, along with senior defensive tackle Jordan Hill and redshirt junior guard John Urschel, but it was announced Wednesday that no players would attend. Penn State has since reversed course, sending Hill and Urschel along with senior linebacker Michael Mauti, one of the players who led Wednesday's group announcement by approximately 25 Nittany Lions who reaffirmed their commitment to the program.

Redd, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound junior from Norwalk, Conn., ran for 1,241 yards and seven touchdowns last season, earning second team All-Big Ten honors. He's been considered one of the top transfer targets for teams looking to recruit Penn State players, with USC prominently mentioned as a possible destination. The Trojans, who enter the 2012 season as a national championship contender, could use the help at running back, where a lack of depth behind 1,000-yard rusher Curtis McNeal could leave USC hard-pressed to live up to its "Tailback U" moniker.

The addition of Redd would certainly shore things up in the Trojan backfield. The question now is whether it will happen.
