Brian Hoyer has led the Cleveland Browns to another win and now that the team is in playoff position, the franchise has to decide whether to sign Hoyer to a long term contract and that could mean a trade in the future for Johnny Manziel and the Dallas Cowboys could be a potential option after Jerry Jones expressed interest in the quarterback leading up to the draft.
Hoyer has been excellent for the Browns this season and he now is 9-3 as a starter for the team and he has the team at 6-3 this season and first in the division. According to Pro Football Talk, Hoyer is putting the team in the "corner" regarding his future and Manziel's future, as he is playing well enough to deserve a contract after this season and that could push the team to keep Manziel on the sidelines. Earlier this season reports had Hoyer looking for the Browns to trade Manziel or he couldn't sign a contract, but the quarterback came out to refute those claims.
Either way, the Browns have a decision to make even if they keep both players, as Manziel will continue to develop and will itch to play, but if Hoyer continues to win, he should continue starting. Hoyer looked and played much better than the $100 million QB on the field on Thursday against Andy Dalton and now many will wonder whether Hoyer will remain with the Browns. Hoyer's agent Joe Linta has tried to handle expectations all season and he said that Hoyer's record and his play will dictate how things go and clearly that is working.
Hoyer has not put up Peyton Manning numbers, but the Browns don't need that and now he has the team in position for their first playoff appearance in years. Just because Hoyer will be starting doesn't mean that Manziel will be traded, but there is a chance that the Browns could listen to offers for him. The Cowboys likely wouldn't make this deal, but in the future it could be an option. Tony Romo is getting older and he showed the past couple weeks that he is not invincible and while Brandon Weeden is solid, maybe another Browns backup would be better.
Hoyer only has one 300-yard game this season, but he has led the team to six wins and now he has 10 touchdowns and just four picks on the season. Hoyer takes care of the ball and he has been putting the Browns in position to win and now they are not just a playoff hopeful, they are an AFC North division hopeful and now they have a three game winning streak going. Hoyer conceivably could have the team at 10 wins, as there are winnable games on the schedule against the Falcons, Texans and Bills, while the team has the Bengals and Ravens towards the end of the season.
