The Maple Leafs come into the game after a win in overtime against the Avalanche and they have the Red Wings in a home and home after this. The Maple Leafs missed the playoffs last season and now they are looking to get back after what they did a couple years ago. The team had the eventual east champs the Boston Bruins on the ropes before losing Game 7 in overtime and now they are looking to get back to that point.

The Leafs are fifth in the early part of the season in power play percentage and they also are 10th in goals per game. Phil Kessel has been a factor since coming in and he put in the winner and that defeated the Avalanche.

The team scored six goals against the Rangers and knocked King Henrik out of the game in the second period and that is one reason for the inflated rank right now. The east is very top heavy again with the Bruins and the Penguins the best teams and the Rangers come in after winning the conference last season. The Canadiens are a sleeper team to make it all the way this season and it comes after they have a tough series against the Rangers in the east finals last season.

The Red Wings have Johan Franzen leading the team in scoring and now Howard comes in looking to get a win and the Wings are hoping they can get on track. The team lost to the Bruins and they will continue the home and home at home at Joe Louis Arena after playing this matchup with the Leafs. The Maple Leafs have a tough schedule to start the season and after losing to the Canadiens and the Penguins, the team has won over the Rangers and the Avalanche before playing the Red Wings. The team is about to take a road trip and those will be against the Red Wings, Islanders and Senators before coming home to play Boston.
