The Ryder Cup 2014 starts up next month in September and despite his poor play recently on the PGA Tour, Tiger Woods remained in the mix for an at-large selection says captain Tom Watson, but now updates say that Woods will stay off the course after Watson stated that he will consider the 14-time major champions for the US golf team at the Ryder Cup and this year things start up on September 25 and Watson will make his picks in a matter of weeks.

UPDATE: Woods has taken himself out of contention for the Ryder Cup, citing his injuries and recovery time.

Tiger had a rough go of it at the British Open and at the PGA Championship and he also has been dealing with injuries all season, including when he was out for an extended period of time with back surgery. Woods missed the cut at the PGA Championship heading into the third round and Rory McIlroy eventually won that for his second win at the major. The Ryder Cup team has nine players qualifying automatically for the team and Watson also has three at-large choices to make for the team.

Woods did not look his best at Valhalla and now he is not scheduled to play again until the Ryder Cup starts and that could be an issue for Watson, who said that Woods needs to be healthy and playing well to be selected. Woods could potentially be selected for the team and then replaced later and that gives Watson an out if he wants to pick Woods for the US Team.

The United States has a deep group for the Cup, but Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Jimmy Walker, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Zach Johnson have not won in a while and Kuchar could be out of the mix with a back injury. Woods said he mostly was pain free heading into the PGA Championship and even if he doesn't play again until the Ryder Cup, he at least will get some rest until then. Woods might be able to squeeze into the mix based on who will be out and that could give Watson the flexibility to pick him.
