MLB Standings 2014: Kansas City Royals Lead Detroit Tigers In AL Central After Hot Streak

Aug 12, 2014 01:23 PM EDT

The 2014 MLB Standings has a new leader on top of the AL Central division, as the Kansas City Royals have caught the Detroit Tigers and have made up 8.5 games in no time and they now are the division leaders, while the Tigers are currently in the second wild card spot heading into the second half of the August schedule.

The Royals have been very hot and they have gone 9-1 while the Tigers have been just 4-6 in their last 10 games and now they are on top of the central. According to ESPN.com, the Royals have not been alone in this spot this late in the season since winning the World Series in 1985 and now they have the chance to really make a push. The Tigers are nursing numerous injuries and now Justin Verlander may be out for a bit and this could be the opening that Kansas City needs.

The Tigers looked like they had the division wrapped up a few weeks ago, but now it's the Baltimore Orioles with the big lead in the division standings and now the Tigers are into the wild card chase. This year the American League race is tight for that second spot and right now the Tigers are in it, but they only lead the Seattle Mariners by a game.

Felix Hernandez has been filthy and he had another fantastic start on Monday night to defeat the Blue Jays. The Mariners are one game ahead of the Blue Jays behind the Tigers, while the Yankees are three back of Detroit. The Indians and Rays are on the fringe, but they need to start playing better for any chance of making it in. The Royals just swept the Giants and now have continued their hot play and they could take that into October.
