Oakland Raiders Rumors: Dennis Allen Denies Derek Carr, Matt McGloin Starter Reps Over Matt Schaub as Andre Holmes, Rod Streater, Greg Little Seek QB Consistency

Aug 11, 2014 12:13 PM EDT

Dennis Allen is remaining true to his word that there is no quarterback competition taking place for the Oakland Raiders this season. The team is attempting to establish some sort of rhythm and consistency on offense and that starts with having the same quarterback under center week in and week out. They have suffered through a wide range of quarterbacks over the years, but in 2014 it will be Matt Schaub at the top of the depth chart no matter what.

The Oakland Raiders traded for Schaub with the intentions that he would be the starter and they intend to keep that plan in place. The Raiders drafted Derek Carr this year, drawing many to believe that the rookie might be under center sooner than Oakland is saying, but as the team heads into their third week of training camp, the quarterback has yet to see any first-team reps.

After the team's preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings, Allen spoke on both quarterback's performance that evening. Carr did not take a single first-team snap and he will not be for the remainder for camp.

"It's not really part of the plan right now," Allen said, via CSNBayArea.com. "We'll evaluate everything as we move along, but the plan is to work Matt Schaub as the starting quarterback. I think he's done a good job of doing that."

Schaub's performance left a little to be desired. Allen noted that he was not disappointed in the veteran's play, but there was a lot of improvements that needed to be made. Schaub had one first down in three series. He and the other wide receivers never looked to be on the same page causing plenty of inconsistencies.

The wide receiver battle might be garnering more attention now than the quarterback play. The Raiders lack a true No. 1 receiver on the roster, causing the passing game to be more of a committee effort. Brice Butler led the effort against the Vikings while Denarius Moore went 3-for-3 on the night. However, returning starts like Andre Holmes and newly signed Greg Little failed to make any kind of impact. The Raiders need these receivers to step up if Schaub has any chance of being successful.
