Boston Celtics Rumors: Omer Asik Traded if Kevin Love Deal Fails? Houston Rockets Target Jeff Green as Joel Embiid Injury Makes Pau Gasol, Greg Monroe Options

The Boston Celtics are ready to make deals this offseason. The team is not major players for any of the big available free agents, instead setting their focus on trades to help with roster upgrades. The Celtics have been linked to the Kevin Love rumor mill, but that is a long shot at best. So who are the Celtics targeting in more realistic trade scenarios?

According to Chuck Myron of HoopsRumors.com, the Celtics are the favorites to land Houston Rockets center Omer Asik. The two teams have discussed this deal once before. During the mid-season trading period, the Celtics inquired about Asik, but backed out of a deal when Houston's asking price was too high. Now with the offseason set to begin in just two weeks, Boston is once again asking about Asik, hoping the Rockets have lowered their return demands.

While a deal for Love is one of the primary focuses of Boston especially prior to the NBA Draft, the team has other needs before they can become contenders once again. Getting a quality big man that can defend inside is something the Celtics are in need of outside of Love's talents. Yes, the forward would pair nicely with Rajon Rondo, but his defense leaves a lot to be desired.

Asik comes off the books in a year, so while his $15 million contract carries an $8 million cap hit, he is an excellent one-year rental. However, Boston's pursuit of Love could hurt a deal for Asik. Houston wants a quality player in return for the center who has seen time as both a starter and sixth man. Myron continues his report saying that the Celtics are very willing to trade Jeff Green, but it is unclear which team will get him.

Green was included in the original deal for Asik. At this point, that is the best Houston might be able to get for the center. After a year of attempting to move him and no teams taking the offer, if the Rockets can get the young forward they should make the deal. Green is one of the best assets the Celtics have. He would have to be included in a trade for Love, leaving Boston to assess their priorities. If they can move Green for Love, they likely take the deal. Asik will be around on the market for some time, so if Boston feels Love is headed elsewhere, then the team can always make that switch instead.
