NFL Network Top 100 of 2012: Aaron Rodgers is Number 1?

Aaron Rodgers finished on top of the NFL Top 100 mountain and took home the number one spot.  He finished ahead of Drew Brees, who slid into the 2nd spot, and Calvin "Megatron" Johnson, who was the top non-signal caller at 3rd

Was Rodgers ranked a bit high?  Possibly. I personally had him in the top five and was honestly divided on whether or not I'd place him inside of the top three.

Rodgers finished the 2011 regular season with a 122.5 QB rating and continued to build off 2010's late season success.  He threw for 4,643 yards and 45 TDs.  His passing yardage falls 833 yards short of the runner up's 2011 numbers.

So the question begs to be asked, is Rodgers truly the number one player in the league? Is Brees? Is someone else the rightful winner?

Granted, Brees played over half of his games in perfect dome climates.  But Rodgers also had the ability to work with a remarkably deep receiving corps.  That same group of receivers made current Seattle backup QB, Matt Flynn look like he was playing EA's Madden on rookie mode.

But the regular season body of work for Rodgers is indeed quite impressive when you consider that he carried an extremely porous defense to a 15-1 record.  In fact, Green Bay didn't sustain a scare until December, when the Giants managed to tie the game in the final moments of the fourth quarter.  Rodgers would lead his offense down the field in quick fashion, and set up the winning the field goal.

Honestly, the nature of this list is pure conjecture.  Obviously, no one understands the NFL better than the players themselves.  That said, it would be nearly impossible for even the most analytical experts of the game to anoint an absolute number one player on a list that spans all positions.

Is Rodgers the best player in the league?  He is certainly a valuable one.  More valuable than Brees, Brady, or either of the Mannings?  That's a tougher call than this list may make it look.
