Cleveland Browns Rumors: Johnny Manziel To Win Starting Job Over Brian Hoyer In 2014? Ben Tate, Miles Austin Must Step Up

Jun 18, 2014 08:53 AM EDT

The Cleveland Browns are coming into the 2014 season with Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer at quarterback and right now Hoyer has the starting job, but Manziel will get the chance to compete in training camp and could win out the job, but to do so players like Ben Tate, Miles Austin and Earl Bennett must step up and play well for him.

Manziel has electric talent and he comes in with more attention than most rookies and to start off training camp he will be the backup and Mike Pettine made sure he understood that coming in. According to ESPN.com, Manziel has agreed to a contract with the Browns after being a first round pick and at the number 22 selection he now has a $8.25 million deal over four years and that isn't counting whatever endorsements and off the field business he brings in.

Manziel is a player that will get a ton of media attention this season whether he plays or not and coming into training camp in July he will be the backup and has to win the job. Hoyer was solid last season before getting injured and now he will be coming in as the incumbent and he split time last season with Brandon Weeden before he was released during the offseason.

Manziel has put up some amazing stats in college and he is a dual threat that should bring some excitement to the Cleveland offense, which is now being run by Kyle Shanahan after Norv Turner last season. Manziel had nearly 8,000 passing yards in college and he won a Heisman Trophy and amassed 2,160 yards on the group and he had 93 combined touchdowns in his two years at Texas A&M and he was also the first freshman to win the Heisman.

For Manziel to have success, players like Ben Tate, Miles Austin and Earl Bennett will need to step up, especially with Josh Gordon likely out for the season. Gordon is facing a drug suspension and he could be out for the entire season after leading the league in receiving yards last year with over 1,600 yards.
