All sports, especially mainstream American favorites, enjoy rivalries. Feuds thriving on a rich history of thick, hardened hatred that suck even the most foreign rookies into the mix as if they were seasoned veterans or lifelong fans. Rivalries can split states or cities. They can even divide families.
But normally, rivalries form between opposing franchises or dueling players. In the case of Gabby Douglas and Jordyn Wieber, their battle is amongst teammates.
Wieber is the current U.S. National champion for the second year in a row after securing back-to-back victories. During the Olympic trials, she will be competing for one of five spots on the U.S. Women's team against several young women, including Douglas.
But Douglas is a familiar foe. Douglas threatened to cost Wieber a second consecutive U.S. National title but suffered a misfire in her routine.
Both Douglas and Wieber could find themselves achieving their goal of representing the United States this summer in the Olympics, but only one can take home the ultimate prize.
If both women advance to London, they could very well find themselves competing head to head for the coveted all-around title.
One of the summer's more interesting Olympic storylines may flow through the women's gymnastics team.
