The Miami Dolphins have made a number of moves this offseason to improve on offense and while a Mike Wallace trade may not be the best move to help that, the team could look to deal him along with Lamar Miller for draft picks or need areas if they feel that Knowshon Moreno and Jarvis Landry are good enough to be starters, as Ryan Tannehill needs a more consistent offense.
Wallace has been mentioned in trade rumors throughout the offseason and while it seems counterintuitive to trade one of the fastest receivers in the league away when a team needs offense, Wallace was not at his best last season. General manager Dennis Hickey was not the one to sign Wallace to a $60 million contract and while he is a very athletic player, Wallace did not perform up to his standards last season and it didn't help early on when he complained about Tannehill not getting him the ball enough.
While that is not enough reason for a trade, it really isn't helpful for a developing quarterback to have a wide receiver in his ear complaining about getting the ball. Wallace was known as a "me first" receiver before he came to the Dolphins and if that continues to play out, he could be on his way out of town next year. The team brought in Knowshon Moreno and after he set career highs with the Broncos in receptions and yards as well as rushing yards, he could be a nice weapon out of the backfield. The rushing game ranked 26th in the league last season and even five spots up could be huge for the Fins in 2014 after Daniel Thomas and Miller struggled during the season.
Last season the Dolphins got shutout against the Bills and scored just seven points over their final two games and that was as the team was trying to make the playoffs. Wallace and Brian Hartline were solid down the stretch, but Tannehill went cold and part of the reason for the struggles was the inconsistent running game and the team hopes it has rectified that now. The team added to the running back position and also built up the offensive line after all the issues last season. The tight end position could be a help as well, with Charles Clay coming back from a solid season and Arthur Lynch could also be a factor after being a fifth round pick from Georgia.
The Dolphins gave up 56 sacks last season and that was by far the most in the league and while some of it was due to the situation and absence regarding Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin, the team was still terrible up front. Tannehill needs better blocking to continue his development, as he was running for his life for most of last season while dealing with the porous offensive line. The team drafted Ja'Wuan James in the first round and also drafted a tackle in the third round and this is on top of the move they made to sign Branden Albert in the offseason. Those additions should greatly help the offensive line and Tannehill and it also could give the rushing attack a nice boost.
