The NFL trade rumor mill is starting to spin heading into the NFL draft in May and names like Ryan Mallet, Christian Ponder and Ryan Nassib have all come up as potential options for teams and clubs like the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans or Oakland Raiders could look to make a deal for one of the young QBs over drafting someone like Blake Bortles or Johnny Manziel in the top 10.
The draft is deep at the position this year and with many GMs unsure about how the top three names will perform in the NFL, some teams may look for alternative routes to getting another young quarterback. According to ESPN.com, the Giants could look to trade Ryan Nassib this year heading into the draft, while the Patriots could use Mallett to get some more picks as well. The Patriots are likely to trade Mallett at some point, as he is entering the final year of his contract and that could mean the Pats are looking to draft another backup for Brady.
Bill Belichick knows when to pull the trigger on things and this year could be the perfect time, as Mallett has spent the last few years as the backup to Brady and he could get a better draft pick then the one they picked him with and on top of that, it will be easy this year to replace him in the draft. The class has a deep class of players at the position and names like Aaron Murray, Zach Mettenberger, David Fales and many other names will be available in the later rounds.
When Belichick drafted Mallett the team was likely going to trade him at some point and they come in with eight draft picks for the draft this year and they could use Mallett to add picks. The team could them use those picks to move up in certain rounds and when Belichick targets a player he likes, he always wants to make sure he has the ammo to get him. The Browns and Jaguars could be options for a deal, as they have some QB issues and if they pass up on Blake Bortles or other names at the top they could be in the mix.
The Giants have seven draft picks and with the number 12 overall selection they are in good position to make a move and trading Nassib could be an option. The Giants added Josh Freeman this offseason and with Curtis Painter also another backup, they could look to move Nassib in a deal to get another pick. The Giants have needs on both sides of the ball and adding more picks will enable the team to add depth as well.
