Lovie Smith recently hinted that Mike Glennon might not be "the guy" for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the future. After a successful rookie campaign starting most of the year in place of Josh Freeman, many assumed Glennon would return as the starter in 2014. However, Smith was brought in as coach and sign familiar face Josh McCown. Now eyeing a quarterback in the first-round of the draft, could Glennon be traded soon?
Smith has already named McCown the starter in 2014. He said that when the team opens for workouts, the veteran would be No. 1 and the second-year quarterback would be No. 2. He then hinted that the team is considering making a move for several first-round quarterbacks, including Johnny Manziel. The Buccaneers have the No. 7 pick and aim to jump up if the Houston Texans do not grab him.
"I know enough about that draft to know, yeah, there's someone that would be worthy of the seventh pick because everything is on the board right now," Smith said, via the Tampa Bay Times. "Whenever you have a chance to get a franchise quarterback, you have to consider that."
So that brings into question what happens with Glennon. The quarterback showed off plenty of potential last season, leaving many to believe he could earn rookie of the year honors or at least finally bring Tampa Bay quarterback stability. In 13 games last season, he tossed for 2,608 yards and 19 touchdowns with just nine interceptions. His stock is high and the team could be looking to move him for more draft picks.
The Oakland Raiders could be very interested in this deal. With Matt Schaub penciled in as the starter, they could bring Glennon on to develop for a year, learn the offense and then replace the veteran. The Raiders could use a first-round pick on a wide receiver instead of another rookie quarterback and meet all of their needs.
The Minnesota Vikings might be interested. The team is trying to figure out their quarterback picture while no being very impressed with the draft options. With Matt Cassel signed, Glennon could play backup for a year and then take over. His proven success might be more enticing for Minnesota.
The Tennessee Titans could also be a good fit. The team is not looking at Jake Locker as their future. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt likes pure pocket passers having worked with Ben Roethlisberger and Philip Rivers. Glennon fits that mold. He is young and could simply replace Locker sooner rather than later.
Tampa Bay has not confirmed an attempt to trade Glennon. However, Smith is making it clear he is not the future and likely will not develop into it.
