The New England Patriots are still working out what their final receiving rotation with the priority of improving off 2013's struggle. The Patriots have made several strides in the right direction, bringing back Julian Edelman, signing Brandon LaFell and targeting a top player in the upcoming draft. But injuries could again become an issue for New England as tight end Rob Gronkowski plans on taking his time returning to the field.

The Patriots are once again dealing with Gronkowski's variety of injuries which will headline their offseason workouts, training camp and possibly into the start of the 2014 season. According to Mark Freeman of Bleacher Report, Gronkowski plans to "take his time and then take more time" when it comes to healing from a torn ACL and MCL suffered in Week 14 of last season. Dr. James Andrews stresses that the tight end is right where he should be in his recovery from surgery, but Gronkowski is not taking any chances.

The tight end has the right to take his time. His list of injuries only seems to be getting longer. He has had back-to-back seasons cut short with injuries and continues to have offseasons consumed of rehabbing. While he remains one of the Patriots' top players, the team needs to find a proper replacement if Gronkowski opts to sit out the first few games.

As of now, the Patriots are looking at free agent options, but likely will not make a move until after the NFL Draft. ESPN sources have linked the Patriots to both Jermichael Finley and Dustin Keller who are dealing with injury issues of their own. Both players are awaiting medical clearance, but could be ready before Gronkowski is. Both Finley and Keller would be productive signings even when Gronkowski is ready to play again. Given his injury history, having two tight ends on the roster cannot hurt.

The Patriots are used to playing two on the field. Aaron Hernandez was normally the other option for Tom Brady across the middle field. He will not be with the team anymore, leaving that type of receiving spot open. Either Finley or Keller could fill the spot. Both players are trying to beef up interest around them after season-ending injuries have swayed the attention away from them. The Patriots could sign the free agents for cheap, but will wait until they see the draft crop first.
