Chris Johnson Rumors: 49ers Option as Frank Gore Backup if LaMichael James Traded, NY Jets Negotiations Stall as Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens Deny Interest

Chris Johnson apparently did not learn his lesson from the other free agent running backs on the market this season. So far in 2014, no running back has signed a deal for more than three years. Most running backs, even the ones coming off career-high years, are only earning one-year deals with their respective teams. Johnson should not expect any different treatment, no matter what he believes.

Since being released by the Tennessee Titans in free agency, Johnson has yet to take a visit with any teams, but several have been mentioned as having possible interest. There were even a few teams being reported as interested in a trade when he was still on the Titans roster. However, no one has asked him to work out. Johnson's agent believes he will sign with a team by the end of the week, but only if his contract demands are favorable.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the Jets have interest in Johnson now that he has cleared the waiver wires. They would ideally like to pair the veteran with Chris Ivory to create a one-two punch on the ground for quarterback Geno Smith. They have no concerns about recent reports ripping the veteran's work ethic. The only concern about Johnson is how much money he is requesting.

Johnson is coming off a contract where he was set to earn $8 million next season. That is simply not going to happen in free agency and he will be expected to take a pay cut. The Jets are balking at demands right now and plan on holding off on signing Johnson until he looks to lower the price tag.

So where could Johnson head if the Jets deal fails? The Atlanta Falcons have already denied interest in the veteran, opting to fill their ground needs in the draft. The Baltimore Ravens are taking the same approach. Could the 49ers be a good fit?

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the team has soured on LaMichael James as an offensive piece moving forward. The team is currently shopping the running back who has barely touched the field and complained about playing time. San Francisco already has a set starter in Frank Gore. That is not changing. However, if James is gone the only one that might be able to replace him is Marcus Lattimore and he is still not fully healthy yet. Johnson could be a solid addition, but again at the right price.
