The Colorado Rockies and the Miami Marlins are starting off the season on Monday night at Marlins Park in a game that will be live on TV from ESPN2 and streaming from the WatchESPN website and has star Jose Fernandez against Jorge De La Rosa for the opener in 2014 in the first evening game of Opening Day.

Both the Marlins and the Rockies missed the playoffs last season and both have some very talented played mixed in among their young stars, including Giancarlo Stanton, Fernandez as well as Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez. The Rockies are in somewhat uncharted territory, as they are starting the season after Todd Helton retired and now former Twins star Justin Morneau takes over at first base for the first time in a decade and the Rockies are actually expected to rake, as they have some nice batters in the lineup, including Michael Cuddyer, who won the batting title last season and while the pitching will be a question mark, the team is ready to improve.

Cuddyer had a rough spring, but de la Rosa comes in after winning 16 games last season and the Rockies are hoping he can take the next step in his development. The Rockies play in a tough division with the Giants, Diamondbacks and the Dodgers, but they feel they have the talent to win things out. The Marlins on the other hand have talent, but they know they will be bad and wile Fernandez is one of the bright spots in the rotation, there is not much after that. The Marlins added catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and he will be expected to guide the young staff as they move along this season.

The Rockies were bad last season, but not Marlins bad and they went 74-88 and now they will be looking at the .500 mark as a potential target. The team his well last season, ranking in the top 10 in runs and third in batting average overall and fifth in slugging, but despite all that they had trouble in the pitching staff and ended up ranked 28th in the league in ERA and 29th in everything else, including quality starts, WHIP and batting average and now the team is hoping to improve even just a little bit.

Stanton was the top player on the Marlins last season and he will be in the same position this year and he hit .249 with 24 home runs and 62 RBIs despite being injured and now he will be front and center once again for the Marlins. The team ranked last in the league in all the big offensive categories and they were last in runs, batting average as well as on base and slugging percentage and now they have the chance to get better. The team was 11th in ERA and 20th in quality starts and on opening day everyone is 0-0 and there is even hope in Miami for now.
