The Dallas Cowboys have been off to a solid start in free agency and after bringing in quarterback Brandon Weeden to serve as a backup, many have wondered whether the team will think about trading Tony Romo in the future and this comes as the 'Boys are looking to sign Anthony Spencer after bringing in free agent Henry Melton from the Chicago Bears.
Obviously Weeden is not even close to the quarterback Romo is, but based on his age and his physical skills, he could be a nice bridge option to whoever the Cowboys want as their starter after the era of Romo ends. Based on what happened to DeMarcus Ware and his contract, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the Cowboys will try to trade Romo eventually after he signed a six year extension worth $108 million and that could handcuff the Cowboys later on. ESPN.com writer Calvin Watkins looks at the situation from a numbers standpoint and speculated whether the Cowboys and Romo will go down the same road that Ware did, as they will have to keep restructuring his deal each year to keep things in line and that could catch up to both sides.
Next season Romo will count for $27.7 million against the cap and that's more than Drew Brees and as the years go by, the team will have to figure out how to get more space to sign players around him and that could cause for some tough conversations in Dallas. While Romo is not going anywhere anytime soon, it is interesting to think about because of his age and because of the fact that he has never taken the team close to a Super Bowl in his run with the Cowboys. Now, I'm not saying that Weeden would be able to do that, but that the likely will Cowboys have to go through a slight rebuild at some point and if they trade Romo, he could step in and start.
Weeden signed with the Cowboys after being released by the Browns and now that he has signed, it likely means that Kyle Orton will not be back, as ESPN.com reports that the team has not had three QBs on the roster in the season since 2011. Weeden comes in after two up and down seasons with the Browns and he had 5,116 yards with 23 touchdowns and 26 interceptions during that time and now he moves to Dallas. Weeden was highly touted as a rookie and he is much older than most after playing baseball and now he could be a solid veteran backup for the team and for Romo.
The Cowboys also now may be going after their own free agent I Anthony Spencer after losing Jason Hatcher to the Redskins, as ESPN.com is reporting that after signing Henry Melton to a deal, they could have the room to bring back Spencer. Last season Spencer missed the whole season basically and finished with just two tackles and now they could bring him back, as the report says that his deal can give him $5 million and kicks in for a three year option after that and he is coming off an injury as well, which is why the Cowboys may explore a similar deal for him. The Cowboys have moves to make and with some money left to spend they could bring a few other low level free agents along with Melton and Spencer.
