Giants: David Diehl Arrested on Suspicion of DWI

Jun 11, 2012 09:46 AM EDT

David Diehl, starting lineman for the New York Giants, will face charges this morning after being arrested Sunday evening on suspicion of DWI.  Diehl reportedly blew a .18 on the breathalyzer, which is more than twice the legal limit of .08 in New York State. The arrest occurred in Queens.

Diehl has endangered the start of his season, as a suspension is likely forthcoming from the NFL league offices.  Diehl was expected to be the starting RT on a Giants offensive line that is in quite a bit of flux for a defending Super Bowl champion.

With a three day mini-camp beginning this week, it is unclear who will take snaps at RT with the first team.  Reserve James Brewer, entering his second NFL season, is already acting at the top LT due to Will Beatty's ongoing back issues.

Candidates to fill the other tackle role at this point in time include Kevin Boothe and Sean Locklear. Locklear, a former Redskin, was acquired via free agency this past spring.  Boothe is currently the starting LG but could slide to RT if needed.  That would make room on the first team for G Mitch Petrus who the Giants are looking to include in the regular starting lineup within the next two seasons.

Diehl's legal situation is not only disappointing, it is also surprising.  Diehl does not have a history of off- field issues.
