A's vs. Rangers: Jarrod Parker Flirts With No-Hitter as A's Beat Rangers 12-1

If the calendar didn't say Monday you would have thought it was Freaky Friday the way the A's and Rangers switched roles last night.

The Rangers, baseball's best hitting team, could barely muster a hit and the A's, one of the lightest hitting clubs in the majors, scored 12 runs in their 12-1 win on Monday night.

A's rookie pitcher Jarrod Parker flirted with a no-hitter, pitching seven hitless innings before giving up a single to Michael Young in the eighth. It was just the ninth career start for Parker who finished with eight scoreless innings, allowing one hit, three walks and six strikeouts.

"We went in with a really good plan and the execution of it was exactly what we wanted to do," Parker said. "It's one of those days. I had good stuff and they were off a little bit."

A memorable night for Parker was a rather forgettable evening for his counterpart. Rangers' starter Scott Feldman didn't make it out of the second inning, giving up eight runs in the second frame. Bradon Inge did most of the damage, hitting a three-run home run in the beginning of the inning and capping it off with an RBI single later on.

The 12 runs were a season-high for the A's, who had lost 10 of their last 11 games, including nine in a row. In those nine games, the A's had just 12 runs total. They had been shut out in seven of their previous 18 games.

For Texas, the reigning AL Champs, it's another bad loss that saw their pitching give up a lot of runs. The Rangers have lost five of their last six. In addition, it was the third time in a week that they have given up eight runs in an inning. The Mariners did it against them twice in a 21-8 win on Wednesday.

It got so bad for them that they brought in outfielder Craig Gentry to pitch the eighth, the first position player to take the mound for Texas since Scott Sheldon on Sept. 6, 2000.
