At this point in the season, the only way Nnamdi Asomugha is going to get on a team is by way of an injury. The cornerback was released by the San Francisco 49ers, signifying his total drop from cornerback supremacy. So does the former defensive star finish out the year on a roster? A few injuries could have several teams interested in bringing him on board.
The New England Patriots have had a season defined by injuries. Their backfield is especially hurting and as the team enters a final push for postseason play, bringing in Asomugha could help with a big depth issue on the team. With Alfonzo Dennard out officially and Aqib Talib and Kyle Arrington all uncertain with different elements, the door could be open for the 32-year-old in New England.
The Patriots were already rumored to be interested in bringing in someone for secondary help. When Ed Reed became available after getting released by the Houston Texans, many speculated the Patriots would look at him. Reed confirmed their interest saying he did hear from the team before ultimately signing with the Jets. They were likely interested because Bill Belichick loves Reed, but they also need depth.
While Asomugha's game tape clearly shows drop off in production, he still holds some speed and versatility that would fit well with the Patriots system. Belichick is not one to make any big mid-season moves, but the recent run of injuries could force him to look Asomugha's way. The former Pro Bowler would essentially sign for nothing and could easily pickup the schemes.
The Patriots need to sign someone, but they could look towards some younger players instead of the potentially washed up Asomugha. So if not the Patriots, then where? Bleacher Reports is noting the New Orleans Saints could be a very realistic option for the cornerback.
Jabari Greer went down with a leg injury ending his season, leaving the Saints shorthanded entering Week 12. As of now, the Saints have Corey White who is proving to be a solid option in his second year, but his lack of experience is worrisome. Chris Carr is a seasoned veteran, but his skill set is average. Keenan Lewis is the best the team has amongst a few others. That is simply not enough if the Saints are going to get to the Super Bowl.
Asomugha could be an excellent addition into the secondary rotation. He has the experience to help the younger players and still some of the skill set to be productive in the right system. Do not forget, the Saints have Rob Ryan, the coordinator that helped Asomugha create his name in the first place. All of that together could lead to the cornerback getting a contract.
