Boston Red Sox Rumors: Carlos Beltran Switching Sides? Draws Interest from World Champions

The Boston Red Sox are still celebrating their 2013 World Series victory, but thoughts are immediately shifting to the free agent market as Carlos Beltran might be the team's next target. What would Beltran provide and why does he fit the Red Sox's system so well?

Beltran would be entering his 16th season in the big leagues, if he finds work. Without a doubt, the short seasons he had in 2009 and 2010 where he played a combined 145 games has helped Beltran extend his career. Yes, he has knee problems, but since returning, he has driving in at least 84 runs with at least 22 home runs. His batting average will fluctuate, but you can count on the man to get on base.

If he wants to return for two years, he will cost the Red Sox less than $30 million. For a player who can get you 20 home runs, 80 RBI, provide leadership in the clubhouse, still play great defense and excell in the playoffs, Beltran is worth it. He would not be a long term acquisition and he has played more than 140 games in the past three seasons, so there would be no reason to believe that Beltran would suddenly digress.

Short term contracts got the Red Sox the team they have now. Beltran would only be an upgrade over Jonny Gomes, but he could play right field and Shane Victorino, if healthy, can man centerfield. Chances are Jacoby Ellsbury will sign elsewhere since he will likely be far outside of the Red Sox's budget.

Imagine if the Red Sox have Beltran and David Ortiz back-to-back in a playoff lineup? Beltran has 16 home runs, 40 RBI and a .333 batting average in 51 playoff games. Meanwhile, Ortiz has played in 82 postseason games, smacking 17 home runs with 60 RBI while posting a .295 batting average. These are numbers players do not average during the regular season. Beltran and Ortiz get hot when the games are greater and are more meaningful.

A bidding war for Beltran may commence since the New York Yankees have been rumored to having interests in Beltran.

The team that acquires Beltran will get a bang for their buck. Who will it be? Do you think the Red Sox are automatic World Series favorites? Voice your thoughts.
