The New York Knicks have suffered a tough injury to their starting center in Tyson Chandler after he suffered a nondisplaced fracture of the right fibula and now with questions about depth, could NY be the team that signs Jason Collins to a contract finally?
According to the New York Times, the Knicks would be a solid fit for Collins, as it would likely be a temporary option for the next four to six weeks, which is when Chandler is expected to be back. With the Knicks now 1-3 after losing their third straight game, something needs to shake them up and perhaps that could be the signing of Collins? Harvey Araton wrote an article on Wednesday about the possibility of the Knicks signing Collins, who has not been signed since announcing that he was gay and many reports have general managers saying they would sign him, but don't want to because of the media attention that will go with it.
Yes, Collins is 35-years-old, but with the Knicks having not much behind Chandler, could Collins be a solid option for the team? The Knicks have not been too strong defensively and on the boards this season and those are two areas where Collins excels, although he likely wouldn't be able to play starting minutes for Chandler, with Cole Adrich likely being the main option with Chandler out. Last season Chandler was dealing with injuries and he appeared to come back healthy this season, but now he is out for over a month and the Knicks are left scrambling after he knocked into Kemba Walker in the loss against the Bobcats at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday and now they are just 1-3 on the season.
Chandler injured his leg on the play and now he will be out for an extended period of time and that puts even more pressure on Carmelo Anthony, who has had plenty of it already this season. Andrea Bargnani has not been great to start things off and with the team slumping, could Collins be worth it? The team could at least try and while he won't match the nine rebounds per game from Chandler, wouldn't New York be the perfect spot?
How could one player dominate the media attention in the biggest media city in the world? It's not like the Knicks aren't already covered crazily by the media and in a gay-friednly-ish city like NY, Collins could be a star. Knowing James Dolan, it probably won't happen, but will they even consider it?
