Tebow Not Moving Past Sanchez on Jets Depth Chart Just Yet

May 25, 2012 10:57 AM EDT

Tim Tebow, everyone's favorite backup QB, may have a steeper path than originally thought as he battles for the Jets starting QB job.

While no conclusive evidence was ever presented, the court of public opinion was skeptical of the Jets supposed intention of letting Tebow sit the bench.

The Jets opted to trade away a 4th round pick to secure Tebow, almost immediately after extending the (nowhere near expiring) contract of their young, beleaguered Mark Sanchez.

The extension was an effort to reassure their starting QB.  Despite Sanchez enjoying the best statistical season of his career in 2011, the Jets offense floundered and choked towards season's end.

Fingers were pointed at several causes for the club's problems.  A major red flag was the notorious volatility of the Gang Green locker room.  If the Jets are serious about calming the controversial waters, then generating a QB controversy by bringing in the most polarizing figure in the entire league (and state that he will be a backup no less) is probably not the optimal way to go.

Regardless, Tebow is wearing green. And Ryan&Co. weren't lying: he is actually now a member of the punt team.

But while he excelled at yesterday's practice on special teams, he showed that perhaps the Jets were also being serious when they openly claimed that Sanchez's position on the depth chart is not in danger.

Tebow reportedly threw two interceptions during the non-contact "activities" (calling them activities makes the NFLPA feel better about the players practicing football skills before July).

Meanwhile, reports on Sanchez's performance are quite positive.  Perhaps Tebow is truly slated to sit this year as a backup.
