The Red Sox have provided the pop in this series. That was expected. They have hit three home runs in the series compared to the Cardinals' who only have Matt Holliday's Game 1 bomb to show for. Though three home runs is not a great total, the Red Sox know when to hit them. David Ortiz's Game 1 home run gave the Red sox piching a secure lead and his Game 2 bomb almost won the game. Ortiz went 3-3 in Sunday's Game 4, but he did not hit a home run, Jonny Gomes did and it was the game-winner.
It was a sure home run, nothing lucky about it, but the Red Sox barely had Gomes in the lineup. It turns out that a struggling Shane Victorino, who was fortunately too injured to play, was not in the lineup on Sunday. Daniel Nava took over right field and Gomes, who possesses mediocre defensive skills made everybody forget that his defense is lacking. John Farrell looked like a genius and the Red Sox were able to efficiently use their six hits.
The Cardinals also hit six hits in Game 4, but they could only score two runs, which was not enough in this game. Red Sox pitching has given up its his this series, but they have been able to get the Cardinals out in big spots. St. Louis has used the Red Sox's spotty defense to their advantage, scoring a run after Jacoby Ellsbury error allowed Matt Carpenter to advance to second. Carlos Beltran punched him in, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, which did not last much.
Offense Advantage
The Red Sox hit Adam Wainwright very well in Game 1, knocking him out by the fifth inning. The Cardinals struggled against Jon Lester, who cruised in his 7.2 innings of action. Will Wainwright find his command? Will Lester dominate again?
The Cardinals have the higher batting average, out-hitting the Red Sox 32-24 in this series, striking out exactly eight times less through four games this series. The Red Sox have outscored the Cardinals 18-10 in the Fall Classic, but what counts is that the series is 2-2.
