PItching Matchup: Gerrit Cole vs. Adam Wainwright

Just looking at Cole and Wainwright's records in their first and only start in the postseason should have fans shivering at their boots. Both pitchers were in complete control when they took the mound in their respective outings. Their opponents must be praying they could tap into the other's bullpen before its too late.

It feels like Wainwright took the mound ages ago. It hasn't been that long. Last Tuesday, with the start of the NLDS, Wainwright got the Cardinals off to a quick start, winning Game 1 and taking the lead. He pitched seven masterful innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. The only run the Pirates got across the plate was not manufactured, but muscled, as Pedro Alvarez smashed a solo home run to right.

So, the Pirates went to their rookie, Cole, in Game 2 and he was amazing. He sort of took a page out of Wainwright's book, going six innings of one run baseball. The Cardinals only managed two hits off the rookie and a third base runner as Cole walked a batter, but he recorded five strikeouts. Like Wainwright's masterpiece, Cole surrendered the one run on a home run by Yadier Molina.

Cool Facts
In total, the Pirates and Cardinals have scored 14 runs each in this series.
Game 1: 9-1 Cardinals
Game 2: 7-1 Pirates
Game 3: 5-3 Pirates
Game 4: 2-1 Cardinals

This Game 5, though nobody really cares what happened during the regular season anymore, could settle the season series. If the Pirates win, their record against the Cardinals concludes a 13-11. However, if the Cardinals win, the season series concludes 12-12, but obviously, with St. Louis advancing to the playoffs. So they would get the better end of the deal.

Carlos Beltran has homered twice in this series, with another bomb he will tie Derek Jeter for third on the All-Time Postseason Home Run list.

Manager Mike Matheny received the gift a manager could ask for; great rookie pitching to hold on to the series for their ace to shut the door. What will Cole bring to the stage as he will be opposed by one of baseball's best?

Pirates, Cardinals at 8 p.m. ET on TBS, Wednesday, Oct. 9.
